ByDesign Team

ByDESIGN is published by a volunteer team of thought leaders in their respective fields. The ezine is designed, produced, and edited by a cadre of talented individuals working in a highly collaborative/virtual manner. (We reside throughout the State of California and our subjects are located throughout the US and world.) We are committed to producing a quality, professionally designed and produced publication, offering in-depth stories in a number of professional areas.

Roy Hernandez
Founder, Publisher

Roy is the Founder, President and CEO of Los Angeles-based ThirdWave Corporation, an award-winning Technology Management Consulting/Systems Integration firm established in 1987. Roy has been a tech innovator and thought leader for 36 years. He has received local, national and international industry awards for his technology innovations and projects.

 

Roy authored the Facilities Design Handbook, the first book on the use of Computer Aided Design for large scale architecture, engineering and construction management projects in 1983 while at IBM. Prior to ThirdWave, he practiced architecture and construction management in Silicon Valley where he was responsible for the design and construction of computer industrial parks, commercial, and residential building types throughout the Bay Area. He is the inventor and patent holder for Rapid Workflow Process Modeling® (2004).

 

Mr. Hernandez is the Founder and Publisher of ByDESIGN, and the Founder and Chairman of CASA Alumni, which awards scholarships to students from low income U.S. communities attending CED. Roy received his MA Arch 1978 and BA Arch with Honors 1976 from the College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley. He did post graduate studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the University of Colorado, Bolder.

Joseph Martinez
Senior Writer & Editor

Joseph is a founding partner of Martinez + Cutri Corporation, an award-winning architectural and planning firm which practices worldwide. Established in 1980, their portfolio includes mixed-use, highrise residential, luxury hotels and resorts, educational master planning and buildings, and civic-sector architecture.  He has distinguished himself as an architect, professor, writer, and community activist.

 

Over the past 50 years he has served on various boards and commissions, including: The San Diego Stadium Authority, YMCA, Liberty Station, One Vote!, and the Mariachi Foundation.  Similarly, at UC San Diego he has served on the Alumni Board, Concilio, and the selection committee for the founding Dean of the School of Architecture. Presently, he is spreadheading the Chicanx/Latinx Initiative to quality UC San Diego as a Hispanic Serving Institution. 

 

While a student at UC San Diego he co-founded Maya/MEChA, co-founded The Third World College, and co-chaired the Urban & Rural Studies Academic Plan.  Joseph obtained his Master of Architecture degree in 1975 from Harvard University, and in 1971, his BA from UC San Diego.  Mr. Martinez is known as the “Father of Chicano Architecture”.

Aymee Barajas
Contributing Writer

Aymee is a Sr. Business Analyst in a Los Angeles-based tech company ThirdWave Corporation. She has extensive experience in developing functional and technical requirements for IT Master Planning and Requirements Definition for the procurement of Enterprise Resource Management Systems, e.g., Finance, Human Resources, Utility Billing, Enterprise Asset Management, and Enterprise Content Management Systems. She is an expert on ThirdWave patented Rapid Workflow® methodology Business Process Improvement for government organizations and is in the process of obtaining her PMP Certification. Ms. Barajas is also an accomplished graphic designer and technical writer. She has extensive experience as a visual design consultant and web developer. She is highly experienced with social media platforms/systems and graphic design software packages.

 

Prior to ThirdWave, Aymee had three years of experience in a variety of marketing / communications positions, including Marketing Director for the Minority Association of Premedical Students of UC Merced. Aymee is a graphic designer and web master to ByDesign. She received a BS, in Management and Business Economics, with a minor in Psychology, from the University of California, Merced.

Michael Hernandez
Photographer

Michael A. Hernandez is a Los Angeles-based photographer. His work encompasses various photographic genres including: editorial, commercial, architectural, and art photography. His clients have included major corporations, communications companies and national sports figures. Michael's has shot the ByDESIGN covers since Volume 10 in 2013. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications  Michael is the author of “No Way Out” (2019), a photographic study on the history and impacts of barbed wire. He received his BA, Photography and Imaging, from Art Center Pasadena.

Itzel Torres
Contributing Writer​

Itzel has been both a frequent contributor to ByDESIGN as well as subject, where she appeared in previous issues related to her scholarship at UC Berkeley, a CASA Mural she painted at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design and other various stories.  Itzel acted as the Co-chair for CASA (Chicanx Architectural Student Association). She received her BA in Urban Studies in 2018 at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. She will be one of the contributors for the ByDesign blog: Casistas in Transition.

Lourdes Aguayo Francia

Contributing Writer

Lourdes is currently an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. She is gaining a BS in Architecture, with a minor in Sustainable Design and Spanish Language, Literature & Culture. She is a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholar, putting her in the top 1.5% of her class, and 1 of 300 Gates Millennium Scholars of Chorot IV in the nation. She has astounding skills in fine arts/design and marketing. Lourdes’ assets can be seen through her heavy involvement in and out of campus, including Marketing Committee of art and fashion oriented issue BARE Magazine, Social Media Manager of Regents’ Overnight Host Program and Medical Outreach Club. Lourdes is a contributing writer to ByDesign. She aspires to highlight the deserving work and people of the Chicanx/Latinx community. Lourdes serves on the board of the student organization, CASA, at CED, UC Berkeley.
